DULCE
VERDE produces a very attractive all green,
low fibered spear with tightly oppressed bud
scales and rounded head shaped tip. The interior
spear color is creamy-green. Spear diameters
are larger than other green asparagus
due to the vigorous plant growth associated
with the tetraploid (4N) condition of its
genetics. Most other green asparagus
varieties are diploid (2N). Fern height and
robustness is exceptional, as is the crown
development with storage root volumes that
are nearly twice that of other asparagus
cultivars.
The very mild, sweet tasting spear
of DULCE VERDE is a delight to eat.
The sugar content of the spear is 20% higher
than other green asparagus. The mild
asparagus taste reduces the odor in
the urine of many people who have eaten these
spears. The low fibered, sweet tasting spears
can be used as a raw vegetable in a salad
or as a cooked vegetable.
The large diameter spears produced by DULCE
VERDE can be reduced in diameter by increasing
the plant density (in-row spacing) of the
plants of DULCE VERDE. The increased
inter-plant competition will reduce the diameters
of the spears and the increased number of
plants per unit area will increase the total
spear production.
